19th Avenue at Pacific Boulevard near San Mateo’s Hayward Park Caltrain Station is currently a one-way street without any bicycle facilities.

Plans to build a Class IV protected bike lane to connect two city of San Mateo neighborhoods divided by Highway 101 just got a $500,000 federal funding boost thanks to the efforts of Sen. Alex Padilla and Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-San Mateo.

“We’re very grateful that Sen. Padilla and Rep. Mullin included this important multimodal project as part of their transportation funding priorities,” said San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) Dir. Of Planning and Fund Management Patrick Gilster. “It’s projects like this that help San Mateo County move toward a more sustainable transportation future.”

The protected bike lane would connect residents and business centers on the east side of 101 with the Hayward Park Caltrain Station on the west side of 101.

The design calls for 1.3 miles of continuous Class-IV level infrastructure extending along 19th Avenue and Fashion Island Boulevard. It’s part of a plan by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority that could also include a mobility hub at the site of an existing Park and Ride for connections to a variety of sustainable transportation options.

The funding, which was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, was signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 9.
